Border, 6th century

type: Border

See all objects.

Fragmentary remains of wide tapestry border containing polychrome figures. Extremely fine, even weaving. Among the figures are a human face with a black turban in three-quarter profile; a fantastical face with rabbit ears; vegetal motifs. The center panel is set off by a blue dovetailed border. Within it, on a blue ground, pale polychrome forms possibly a row of interconnected crosses. At the bottom, a red cross in a natural halo. In red, pink, blue and black dyed wools on a natural-colored ground.
